Unifying on Common Ground: It’s Now or Never
Codi Shewan
Keynote & Founder, EverLearn Associates

“When we realize that we’re not alone, we gain the strength and the resolve of others experiencing similar challenges to bolster our resilience in the face of adversity.” -Codi Shewan

This presentation employs an interactive approach, whereby participants will be immersed in a dynamic conversation with their peers with the objective of realizing how their unique challenges are by and large, more common than they may have thought. Participants will discover their shared experiences, while at the same time reinforce the value of their association community as they help one another navigate the challenges in front of them. Tools to manage that change proactively will be introduced and explored, as participants consider how they frame the professions ever-shifting landscape, and their own organizations lens on managing that change.

Witness Cremation Ceremonies
Heather Braatz Instructional Designer, Worsham College of Mortuary Science
Donald Braatz, Crematory Operator/Support Staff Manager (Former), Evergreen Washelli

Just like lowering a casket into the grave, witnessing a loved ones casket as it enters the retort may produce one of the most profound realizations in life: we must all physically separate. In this practical seminar, we will help funeral directors develop ways to communicate and offer this important ceremony to all families who select cremation. We will discuss ways to build trust and properly prepare the family for a ceremony at the crematory, building rapport between funeral directors and crematory operators, and explore ways of overcoming barriers. No matter what your facilities look like, we can help you develop a reverent and memorable ceremony that provides a meaningful last goodbye for the family.

Cremation During COVID-19: A Discussion with Three Last Responders from the Front-Line
Panelists:
Jim Koslovski President, Rosedale & Rosehill Cemeteries
Jon Rettig, Sr. Licensed Embalmer/Funeral Director, Family Care Services
Sandra Walker Vice President, Pacific NW Cremation/Fairmount Memorial
Moderator: Larry Stuart, Jr. Founder, Cremation Strategies & Consulting

Even though businesses in the death-care space were deemed “essential” and could operate, this did not mean business as usual. Every CANA member/death care professional has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in some way. Some have survived outbreaks in hotspots, others have had to master new technology to shift services online, all have struggled to access PPE and resupply. These are only a few examples of how COVID-19 and the resulting public health interventions have changed our profession. But the worldwide pandemic will end, and we will resume our lives armed with lessons learned from these days to better manage change, risk and better prepare for when the next one comes.
