“Being awarded this scholarship is truly appreciated. Words really cannot begin to explain how beyond grateful I am. Learning and being better educated in my field is so important to me, and I know you value this as well. On behalf of the community I have already served and the families I will serve in the future, as well as myself, thank you for the generosity you’ve provided and the support this scholarship
will provide.” - Lauren Brunke, awarded the CANA/Jack Springer Scholarship in Fall 2024 (Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois) |
WHO WAS JACK SPRINGER?Jack Springer served as the executive director of the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) starting in the 1980s. At that time, the national cremation rate was below 20% in the US and 30% in Canada. In an era when funeral professionals were still learning about the disposition method, Jack Springer became the spokesperson not just for CANA, but cremation. Jack was passionate about the topic and could see a future in which cremation was the preferred form of disposition.

“I am currently pursuing my dream of becoming an embalmer and hope to go into the field of ownership one day. There were moments when my dream of pursuing a higher education seemed impossible, but the financial assistance you have provided me has helped me tremendously and kept me going. Because of what you have done for me, I can follow my dream and graduate with my mortuary degree in 2024.”
